Math hints generation is a job in Item Bank Health Check (IBHC) that automatically creates incremental, step-by-step guidance for math-related content. Hints will be generated for Math, Label image with math, and Multi-step math Question types that do not contain hints.

These hints are designed to lead learners through complex problem-solving workflows, providing the necessary scaffolded support to foster mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding.

Two options are available:

• Problem overview & step-by-step guided instructions: which provides an overview of the problem to be solved before giving an indication of the method to be followed, and finally giving the step by step calculation with the answer. 
• Step-by-step guided solution: which breaks down the solution in small steps, guiding the student through every single operation until they reach the solution.

By implementing these hints, you enhance the pedagogical quality of your math assessments, transforming them into more effective instructional tools particularly suited for practice and formative learning environments.

When to use this job

The Math hints generation job is particularly effective when you need to:

• Support formative learning: Prioritize learner success in homework or practice settings by providing meaningful scaffolding.
• Scale authoring efforts: Efficiently integrate sophisticated guidance across large Collections without the heavy manual lift of individual authoring.

Running the job

• Open the Learnosity Console and navigate to Item Bank Health Check.
• Create a Collection or select an existing one with the Item bank you want to analyze.
• Click on Create and select Math hints generation from the menu of available job types.
• Select the preferred hints style.
• Initiate the process by clicking Run job.

The time required for completion depends on the volume of content within the Collection.

Reviewing results

Following the analysis of the Collection, a review space lists each Item where new hints were proposed. It allows you to:

• Evaluate the full sequence of AI-generated hint recommendations.
• Choose to accept, refine, or discard the suggestions prior to completing the job and saving changes.

We recommend reviewing results to ensure the AI suggestions match your organization’s pedagogical style and mathematical nomenclature.
