Alt text generation is a job in Item Bank Health Check (IBHC) that identifies images without alternative text (alt text) and automatically generates short written descriptions for them.
This functionality is essential to ensure that visual elements are accessible to learners using screen readers or other assistive technology.
Running this job can also help you ensure your content aligns with global web accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG 2.2), and maintains compliance with key legislation such as the European Accessibility Act or the ADA and Section 508 in the United States.
IBHC is a premium feature and may not be included in your product license. For more information, reach out to your Learnosity Customer Success Manager.
Note that this job does not overwrite existing alt text. It only targets images where alt text is absent.
When to use this job
The Alt text generation job is recommended when you need to:
- Modernize legacy content: Quickly address missing descriptions in large Item banks that were previously imported or created without accessibility data.
- Prepare for audits: Efficiently ready your Item banks for upcoming accessibility reviews or compliance certifications.
- Optimize workflows: Scale your accessibility efforts without the heavy manual lift of writing individual descriptions for every image asset.
Running an Alt text generation job in an IBHC Collection
- Open the Learnosity Console and navigate to Item Bank Health Check.
- Create a Collection or select an existing one with the Item bank you want to analyze.
- Click on Create and select Alt text generation from the menu of available job types.
- Initiate the process by clicking Run job.
The time required to complete the analysis depends on the volume of content in the Collection.
Reviewing results
Following the analysis of the Collection, a review space lists each Item where alt text was generated. For each Item, it shows:
- The image that was processed.
- The AI-generated alt text suggestion.
- An option to accept, edit, or reject the suggestion before applying it.
We recommend reviewing results to ensure the AI suggestions match your organization’s specific terminology and pedagogical style. Once approved, you can finalize the updates to your Item bank by exporting the Collection.
