Scoring groups allow authors to configure category or topic-based reporting for Activities. Authors can group Items using tags or Item selection and define benchmark scores to support assessment blueprint alignment and reporting on learning goals.
Scoring groups are available from v2026.2.LTS.
To create scoring groups, you must enable the reporting option in Author API.
Scoring groups define reportable groups within an Activity based on selected Items or tags. After learners complete the Activity, the report data can be rendered using the scoring group reportlet in Reports API.
Each scoring group is independent, so the same Item can belong to multiple groups.
Scoring groups can be configured directly in the Authoring UI, without editing JSON.
Scoring groups are available for standard Activities.
Accessing the Reporting tab
After adding Items to an Activity, open the Reporting tab in the Activity editor view to create and manage scoring groups.
Create a Scoring group
To create a new group:
- Click Create scoring group.
- A new scoring group configuration is created with a default name, such as:
- Scoring group 1
- Scoring group 2
- Scoring group 3
- To rename the scoring group, click the default name and edit it as required.
- Choose whether the group is based on:
- tags, or
- Items
A scoring group cannot use both tags and Items.
You can create up to 20 scoring groups per Activity.
Create a tag-based group
Tag-based groups are useful for reporting against:
- curriculum standards
- competencies
- learning objectives
- topic classifications
Use Find tags to search for tags attached to existing Items in the Activity.
The search results display the number of matching Items for each tag. Tags can still be selected even if no current Items match the group criteria.
Select the required tags from the suggestions list. The selected tags are displayed within the scoring group, along with the total number of matching Items included in that group.
To remove a tag from the scoring group, click the cross icon for that tag.
Create an Item-based group
Item-based groups are useful when:
- reporting should focus on specific questions
- Items do not share common tags
- reporting categories require manual curation
Use Find items to select Items already included in the Activity. Items can belong to more than one scoring group.
Only Items currently present in the Activity are available for selection.
After selecting the required Items:
- Click Add items.
- Click Back to return to the scoring group configuration.
The selected Items are then displayed within the scoring group.
To remove a selected Item:
- Select the Item within the scoring group.
- Click Remove.
Configure benchmark scores
Benchmark scores help define expected performance thresholds for reporting purposes.
Authors can define optional benchmark percentages for:
- individual scoring groups
- the overall Activity
Benchmark rules:
- Values support up to 2 decimal places.
- Values cannot exceed 100%.
Manage scoring groups
Scoring groups can be edited or removed at any time without affecting Activity Items.
